US Army Vet and Retired State Trooper
Westminster-Robert M. Ryan, 80, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2017 at UMass Medical Center in Worcester surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves his loving family; two sisters, Brenda M. Kupa of RI and Virginia W. Ryan of Worcester; a sister-in-law, Janet M. Ryan of Oxford; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by a brother, Phillip E. Ryan.
Robert was born on August 25, 1937, a son of the late Ernest J. and Mae L. (Leofanti) Ryan. He served in the US Army reserve 1956 to 1964. He trained to be a Massachusetts State Trooper and was commissioned in 1959. He served in various posts for 17 years and retired in 1974. He was stationed in the North Hampton, Grafton and Holden Barracks. He also owned his own forestry business retiring at the age of 65. Robert also worked for his father at the Sherwood Diner in Worcester in his youth and even while working as a State Trooper. He was well known for his environmental concerns and desire to maintain Massachusetts forests. He was an expert marksman. He was also a Deputy Boxing Commissioner in the 1960’s.
Robert’s funeral will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 12 noon in the Westminster Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 123 Main Street, Westminster, MA 01473.
Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery, Old Westminster Road, Hubbardston, MA.
A calling hour will be held in the funeral home, from 11 a.m. – 12 noon prior to the funeral.
