Fitchburg: Mario J. Scaficchia, 94, a life-long Fitchburg resident, died Wednesday, March 21, in River Terrace Healthcare, Lancaster, after a brief illness, with his family by his side.
His wife of 61 years, Angela (Larocca) Scaficchia, died in 2010.
He leaves one son, James L. Scaficchia and his wife Nancy of Fitchburg; one daughter, Donna Marie Caron and her husband Peter of Princeton, MA; five grandchidren, Melissa Caron-Ghiringhelli and her husband Marty of Hingham, MA, Tracy Caron and her husband Robert Ward of Westminster and Jillian, Nina and Vincent Scaficchia, all of Fitchburg; three great-grandchildren, Lila, Michael and Samuel Ghiringhelli; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Delia Antil, Rose Quatrale and Ada Valera.
Mr. Scaficchia was an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 256 for 45 years.
He was a 1941 graduate of Fitchburg High School and attended the Coin Electric Trade School.
Mario was a life- long member of St. Anthony di Padua Parish in Fitchburg, the Order of the Sons of Italy, Christopher Colombo Regina Elena Lodge #169, the Marconi Club, the Retired Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus, Joseph P. Keating, Fitchburg Council #99. He enjoyed his garden and yard which he was very proud of and walking.
He was a veteran of World War II, U.S. Navy, serving as a Seaman First Class. He received the World War II Medal, American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with 3 stars, and received a Presidential Citation while serving on the U.S.S Henry A. Wiley.
Mario was born in Fitchburg, MA, on September 10, 1923, a son of the late Luigi and Viola (Rosetti) Scaficchia.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Manor on the Hill and the staff of the River Terrace Healthcare for their kindness and care.
Mario's funeral will be held on Monday, March 26, 2018, from the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony di Padua Church, 84 Salem St., Fitchburg.
Calling hours at the funeral home are on Monday, March 26, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.
