Obituary

Lillian S. Griffiths, 99
Retired School Teacher

Lunenburg-Lillian S. Griffiths, 99, longtime Lunenburg resident, passed away on Saturday, September 30th, at Oosterman’s Rest Home in Wakefield.

Lillian was born on September 29, 1918 in Fitchburg, MA to the late Dominic and Helen (Jakinczik) Szocik and grew up on the family farm in Lunenburg with 4 brothers and 5 sisters. After distinguishing herself as a scholar-athlete at Lunenburg High School and graduating from Fitchburg State College in 1941, she began her 33-year career in education as a junior high teacher in Lunenburg. She went on to teach 5th grade, earn her masters degree from Boston University and serve as the Reading Supervisor for grades K-8 in Lunenburg’s schools from 1957 until her retirement in 1977. She was past president of the Lunenburg Teachers’ Association and the North Worcester County’s Council on Reading.

Lil is fondly remembered for having a great laugh and baking yummy cakes and cookies for her neighbors, friends and family. She was a member of the Lunenburg Bridge Club for more than 55 years. She enjoyed ballroom dancing with her husband Les. They were a terrific couple on and off the dance floor for over 65 years.

And Lil loved sports. She was an avid golfer and past president of the Oak Hill Country Club Women’s Golf Association. She also coached basketball and field hockey at Lunenburg High and was deeply honored to be one of the first ten inductees to the LHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

Sadly, she was predeceased by her son Robert Griffiths in 1977, her beloved husband Leslie Griffiths in 2009, and all of her sisters and brothers over the years. She leaves her daughter Gail Welch of Sonoma, CA; granddaughters Brodie Welch and Casey Richter and two great-grandsons.

Funeral services are private. She will be buried in Lunenburg’s North Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship fund or the charity of your choice.

The Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Mass Ave, Lunenburg has been entrusted by the family with the funeral arrangements.
