Westminster: Irja Josephine (Teittinen) Tamminen, 96 died peacefully Saturday, February 10, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Her husband Tauno C. Tamminen died January 7, 2002.
She leaves one son, Charles T. Tamminen of S. Lancaster; one daughter, Sandra J. LeBlanc and her husband Roger LeBlanc Sr of Westminster; three grandchildren, Roger LeBlanc Jr. of Leominster, Tamara J. St. Germain of Leominster and James LeBlanc of Peterborough, NH; ten great-grandchildren; one niece, Nancy Green of Westminster and one nephew, Michael Francis of Newton.
Irja is predeceased by two sisters, Nelma T. Grainger and Ellie M. Francis.
She was born in South Ashburnham on November 6, 1921, a daughter of the late Johann and Josefina (Jaakkola) Teittinen. She graduated from Cushing Academy and then attended Stevens Business College in Fitchburg. Irja worked as a secretary for Hope Rubber in Fitchburg as a seamstress for Asher Pants and retired from C&W Fabricators as a secretary.
Irja enjoyed counted cross stitch, Sudoku puzzles and collecting teddy bears and Santa Claus’s. She volunteered at many of the Town Benefits for several years. She also attended the Leominster Assembly of God Church in Leominster for several years.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Westminster Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 123 Main Street, Westminster, MA 01473.
Burial will be in the Woodside Cemetery in the spring.
A calling hour will be held in the funeral home from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral services.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Irja’s name to the Westminster Benefit Fund, Inc, P.O. Box 63, Westminster, MA 01473 or may be left at the funeral home.
