Helen M. Walling, 99
Athol- Helen Martha (Matthes) Walling, 99, passed away on December 6, 2017.
Helen was born on June 13,1918 in Reading, Pennsylvania the daughter of German immigrants, Oscar and Johanna (Jausz) Matthes. She was raised in Reading and lived most of her life in Woodmere, New York on Long Island. Helen and her husband Alfred moved to the Gables’ residence of Fitchburg, MA in 2001.
Helen excelled at everything she did at Woodmere High School, where she met her beloved future husband, Alfred Walling. She performed in musicals, was a member of the National Honor Society and the girl’s championship field hockey team.
She earned an associate’s business degree from Pierce’s Business College in Philadelphia, PA. Helen worked for a time as the administrative assistant for a bank vice president prior to marrying Al on June 22,1939 at the Woodmere Methodist church in New York.
Mrs. Walling participated in many church and community activities as a volunteer. She served faithfully at the St. John’s/Trinity Episcopal Church Senior Citizens’ Friendship luncheons. Helen skillfully directed the Hewlett/Woodmere public library’s building expansion. She served as president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary for St. John’s Hospital in Far Rockaway, New York raising funds for that medical facility.
Helen’s delicious home cooking will be fondly remembered. She made clothes for her children with her skillful sewing. Helen enjoyed reading, music, playing golf and found special joy in being with her children and their families.
In Fitchburg, Helen was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. Happy summers in New England with Al, their daughters and Al’s mother, endeared Helen to this beautiful region. Helen’s greatest contribution was her ever present thankful positive and kind attitude to everyone. Her sweet smile brought God’s light to many lives. She taught her daughters the importance of treating all people with love and respect. Her devotion to her family as a wife, homemaker, sister and grandmother gave her daughters a wonderful example to follow.
Earlier in her life, Helen had received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She remained very brave and strong through many medical difficulties. We can rejoice knowing that she is with the Lord now and reunited with Al.
She was predeceased by her “dear husband” of 68 years, Alfred, in September of 2007; her sister, Betz Barnes; her brother Chich (Richard) Matthes and his son, Dick Matthes. She leaves her three daughters and their families; Susan Pratt of NH; sons and wives, Earle and Kelly (Emerson) Pratt of Baltimore, MD, Christopher and Lauren Pratt of Merrick, NY, Helen’s daughter, Caroline and John Daines of St. Ives, England, their son-in-law Ros and Jeff Place; their son and daughter- in-law Rob and Sarah Allen of England; Helen’s daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jim Bender of Ashburnham, MA; their son Steve Bender and wife Kylie of Milford, CT; and son Kevin of NYC,NY; and 8 great grandchildren.
