Obituary

Westminster-Timo W. Ojanpera, 58, died Thursday, April 30, 2020 at UMass Medical Center in Worcester after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 15 years of Norma E. (Dowdy) Ojanpera; his father Terho Ojanpera (97) of Finland; one brother, Ari Ojanpera and his wife Gay of Alabama; three sisters, Maritta Guertin and her husband Robert of Boca Raton, FL, Liisa Wuoti and her husband Donald of Westminster and Arja Yliniemi of Finland; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Timo was born in Fitchburg on September 12, 1961, a son of the late Martha (Alapere) and Terho Ojanpera. He grew up in Westminster and was a 1980 graduate of Oakmont Regional High School. He worked as an electrician and was a member of the IBEW electrical workers union, local 96 and attended WITI in Worcester during his apprenticeship. He served in the US Air Force in Operation Desert Storm as a TSGT. He then enlisted in the Army National Guard and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and retired from there as an SSG.

In his youth he enjoyed riding dirt bikes and snowmobiling which lead him to his true passion of riding Harley’s. He loved the outdoors and nature. He had always loved to explore and hike in Hagar Park and on Mount Wachusett. Timo also loved his pets; Mollie, Barney, and Winnie were some of his favorites.

He was a member of the Rice Meadow Fly Club in Westminster and a former member of the Turnpike Rod and Gun Club where he enjoyed target shooting with his friends. He was always willing to help his family and friends with an electrical or any other project. He was especially proud of his father, who served in the Finnish Airforce and Army and were able to stop the Russians when they invaded Finland in 1939.

In consideration of our current restrictions on gatherings and to preserve the health of others, a private graveside service will be held for Timo at the Woodside Cemetery in Westminster. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date when we all can once again gather together.
