Lunenburg-Theresa “Terry” C. (Mastrangelo) Mahoney, 95, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday morning, October 26, 2021.
Terry was born in Fitchburg, May 21, 1926 the daughter of Francesco “Frank” and Faustina (Montuori) Mastrangelo.
Terry’s family was first and foremost in her life and her greatest joy. She will be lovingly remembered by her four children, William Mahoney and his wife Karen of Atkinson, NH, Ann Marie Peterson and her husband Barry of Ashby, MA, Resa Mahoney of Boxborough, MA, and John Mahoney and his wife Sharyn of Nashville, TN; her brother, Fred Mastrangelo of Lunenburg, MA; her sister-in-law Marjorie (Mahoney) Casey; her former daughter-in-law, Debbie Mahoney; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; her nieces and nephews; and many friends and extended family.
She was pre-deceased by her husband William “Bill” A. Mahoney, Jr. in 1973.
Terry graduated from Abbott Academy in Andover, MA then Pembroke College at Brown University where she met the love of her life—her husband, Bill. They were married on June 25, 1949. She later earned a Master’s of Education degree through Fitchburg Teacher’s College (currently State University), Fitchburg, MA.
Terry invested with commitment and passion to the things she valued most in life: Her faith, her family, her career, her heritage, her education, and her gardens. She was an avid reader her entire life, for her, reading a good novel was always better than a good movie.
She had a wonderful career, spending over 45 years as an educator at St. Anthony’s School, which provided her with the opportunity to teach a variety of subjects and grade levels; her final and favorite grades were 7th and 8th. She also led the drama club, judged and prepped students for the National Spelling Bee, and taught religious education. Twice she tried to retire and was asked to come back! She continued to teach Latin and French to 8th-grade students part-time until she fully retired at age 82! Throughout her career she always believed that she wasn’t just teaching children, but helping to prepare them for the road ahead in life, and sought to make a positive difference in the lives of the hundreds of students she had the honor to teach.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Health Alliance Home Health & Hospice, and to those who provided exceptional and loving care to Terry in her final months, allowing her to remain at home by the gardens and lake she loved—most especially to Esther, Rochelle, Tammy, Shayna, Brenda C, and Cristy.
