NEW YORK CITY – Roswell (Ros), the eldest son of Roswell Thomas and Elizabeth Clare (Bessie) Edwards passed away on May 12, 2022, in the care of the New Jewish Home in New York City. He was ninety-eight at the time of his death.
Ros was born in Providence, Rhode Island on June 21, 1923, but moved to Fitchburg, Massachusetts as a young boy when his father was hired as the foreman of the composing room at the Fitchburg Sentinel. He attended St. Bernard’s Grammar and High School, graduating in June of 1941. He completed freshman year at Fitchburg Teachers College before enlisting in the Army in June of 1942.
Ros was a Cryptographic Technician, Grade 5 in the Signal Corps serving in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the Good Conduct and Victory medals. He was honorably discharged on December 28, 1945.
Upon his return home he enrolled at Middlebury College in Vermont, graduating with a degree in fine arts in 1949. He thereafter established residency in New York City and worked in the printing and publishing industry until he retired in 1962.
Roswell was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Betty), Gertrude Irene (Trudy) and Virginia; as well as his partner of thirty years, Richard Eveleth. Ros is survived by his brother, Raymond James Edwards Sr. of Ormond Beach, Florida and his partner, Patricia Carrier of Brewster, Massachusetts; his nephew, Raymond James Edwards, Jr. of Newport, Vermont; and Richard Eveleth’s children, Kim Eveleth of Los Angeles, California and Roger Eveleth of Chatham, New Jersey.
There is no funeral planned but a graveside service will be held at a later date.
