Rita Joy Lamont

January 25, 1939 ~ January 7, 2022 (age 82)

Rita Joy Lamont, 82, passed away on January 07, 2022, in the comfort of her home after a 5-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and declining mobility.

Rita was born in Penticton, BC on January 25, 1939, a daughter of Harvey and Margaret (Nelson) Wells. She grew up and was married in Chemainus, B.C. on Vancouver Island, Canada.

Rita worked in a grocery store and helped manage the town café. With children, she chose to be a stay-at-home mother and homemaker. She loved and excelled in cooking, sewing, knitting, tole painting, gardening, and especially in mothering.

Rita lived in many places over the years including Vancouver BC, Sarnia Ontario, Switzerland, Germany, and finally settled in Westminster MA where she lived the past 36 years. Her bright personality always opened doors, so she was even able to befriend several Swiss farmer families, and was often invited to visit their farms. Rita also volunteered to help the elderly in various nursing homes for many years in both Germany and Sarnia.

In Massachusetts, she continued her many hobbies, but turned most of her energy to her real passion, animal rescue. She volunteered at Tufts Large Animal Hospital, Baypath Humane Society, Gardner Animal Control, CARE and Ahimsa Haven Animal Rescue. At home, she always had a room full of foster cats, kittens and puppies. She always had a home full of resident animals, including four goats.

She is survived by her husband John Lamont in Westminster MA, her two sons: Gordon Lamont in New Westminster BC, Michael Lamont in Mississauga Ontario, her daughter Lori Roberts in London Ontario, seven grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces in western Canada.

Rita has requested that there be no visitation or service. A celebration of Rita’s life will be held at a later date.
