Phyllis K (Ide) Knuuttila

October 23, 1925 ~ April 8, 2021 (age 95)

Obituary

New Smyrna Beach, FL-Phyllis K. (Ide) Knuuttila, 95, died peacefully in her sleep on April 8, 2021 after a short illness with her loving family by her side.

Phyllis was born in Fitchburg on October 23, 1925 to the late James B. and Julia (Roberts) Ide.  She lived in her hometown of Fitchburg nearly her entire life. Phyllis was predeceased by her late husband, Tauno H. Knuuttila, as well as her grandson, Alexander T. Knuuttila.

Phyllis was a devote Catholic, having attended her beloved St. Bernard Parish nearly all her life.  She also received a parochial education at both the St. Bernard Elementary School and High School. Phyllis also worked for many years at the former Cluett, Peabody and Company, the Asher Pants Co., Nathans Jewelry Store and City Cleaners, all once located in Fitchburg.

Phyllis was the youngest and last surviving sibling of the Ide family, having lost her brother, Walter J. Ide, on October 13,1944 when he was KIA in Italy during WWII while serving with the 363 Regiment, 91st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. Sisters, Avis (Ide) Morris, Pauline Ide, Rachel (Ide) Gowell, and Barbara (Ide) Marcoux, all also predeceased her. Another brother, Richard “Dickie” Ide, passed away in 1923 prior to her birth.

Family was extremely important to Phyllis and she was most proud of the military service her three sons gave to this great country. Mark and Brian both served in the infantry throughout the world with the United States Marine Corps, and James, serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer, USS Harry W. Hill. Other life accomplishments of her three sons would follow, but Phyllis was proudest of their military service to the country.

Phyllis is survived by her three sons, Mark Knuuttila and his wife, Nancy (Olson), of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Brian Knuuttila and his wife, Kathleen “Kate” (Cavins), also of New Smyrna Beach, FL and James B. Knuuttila and his wife, Jennifer (Blood), of Lunenburg, MA. She also dearly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Sarah (Knuuttila) Fletcher and her husband Corey Fletcher of Bluffton, S.C., James Knuuttila of Silver Springs, MD and River J. and Connor B.R. Knuuttila, both of Honolulu, HI. Throughout her long life, Phyllis also enjoyed the company of her many nieces, nephews, cousins, grand nieces, grand nephews and lifelong friends. She was a very kind and caring person with a great sense of humor whose contagious laugh could be heard at many a family cookout. Phyllis was also greatly loved by her loyal cat, “Holly,” a true friend who never once left her side.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that a small gift be made in Phyllis’ name to the St. Bernard Parish at St. Camillus de Lellis Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg, Ma 01420.
