Philip “Phil” N. Burgess Sr., 89, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 in HealthAlliance – Clinton Hospital, Leominster following a period of declining health.
Phil was born in Athol, MA on November 23, 1932, a son to the late Vernon and Evelyn (Murray) Burgess.
Phil attended local schools and graduated from Athol High School, class of 1950. For many years he was active in the alumni association. He went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean war from 1953 until 1954. He earned a National Defense Service Medal.
He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Westminster, UCC for 62 years, a member of the American Legion in Westminster, he was a Shriner, as well as a member of the MECA (Massachusetts Electrical Contractors Association) in which he held the title of President for some time. Phil liked to help others and give back to his community. He was the co-owner of Eyles Electrical in Fitchburg for many years as well as owner of Burgess Electric Company in Westminster.
Phil will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 39 years, Celia J. (Leino) Burgess of Westminster, MA; daughter, Joanna Allen and her husband, David of Hubbardston, MA; son, Philip N. Burgess Jr. and his wife, Michelle of Lawrenceville, NJ; stepson, Randall Bragdon and his wife, Jessica of Westminster, MA; two brothers, Richard Burgess of Winchendon, MA and Howard Burgess of Athol, MA; six-grandchildren, Benjamin D. Allen and his wife, Anna of Westminster, MA, Victoria R. Allen of Hubbardston, MA, Alexandria Burgess, Melanie Burgess, Philip N. Burgess III and Owen Burgess all of Lawrenceville, NJ; former wife, Ardeen S. Burgess of Hubbardston, MA; as well as many friends, colleagues, and relatives.
In addition to his parents, Phil was predeceased by a brother Norman Burgess; and two sisters Vernlyn Rockwell and Joyce Burgess.
You are invited to attend a visiting hour on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 10:00AM – 11:00 AM in the First Congregational Church of Westminster, UCC, 138 Main Street, Westminster, MA 01473.
Phil’s Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 AM.
Burial with Military Honors will follow in Woodside Cemetery, 9 Narrows Road, Westminster, MA 01473.
