Ernest James "EJ" Smith III

LUNENBURG – Ernest James “EJ” Smith III passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday May 11, 2022, in HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, Leominster.

EJ was born in Fitchburg, MA on January 29, 1954, a son of the late Ernest James Smith Jr. and Constance Therese (Caron) Smith.

He attended Saint Bernard’s elementary school and graduated from Lunenburg High School class of 1972. EJ met the love of his life and best friend, Emily Ann Smith at the shore of lake Shirley in Lunenburg. They were married on May 30, 2002 and shared over twenty loving years together.

EJ worked many jobs over the years and was a man of many skills. He was a tree-cutter, logger, mailman, drove a Canteen truck around Gardner for many years and built furniture for Charlton Furniture previously located in Leominster, MA. He especially loved his job with the Leominster City Taxi, where he worked for the last several years.

EJ grew up and lived on lake Shirley where he enjoyed partaking in various water sports on his boat. He was also an avid dart shooter and played darts for 30 years in many leagues. EJ was a fan of NASCAR racing and loved monster trucks. He was known for his selfless love of others and would hand the shirt off his back for those in need. EJ especially loved his dogs.

EJ will be forever remembered by the love of his life, Emily Ann Smith; his adored children , a son, Ernest James “Jamie” Smith IV of Leominster; a daughter, Lyndsay Ann (Smith) Gabriel of Leominster; four sisters, Brenda Ann Rae of Barre, MA, Donna Diane Kamataris of Leominster, Cindy Kovach of Barre, MA, and Andrea Louise Roche of Townsend, MA; brother, Michael Raymond Smith of Ashburnham, MA; three grandchildren, Cameron, James and Shaelyn; and his many dearly loved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces, a great grandnephew and many close friends.

You are invited to a celebration of EJ’s life from 1:00-5:00pm on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at the Franco American Club located at 300 Water Street, Leominster, MA.

The Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Massachusetts Avenue, Lunenburg, MA has been entrusted with the care of EJ’s arrangements.
