Elda M Diaz

May 26, 1933 ~ July 31, 2021 (age 88)


Fitchburg- Elda Mercedes Bolivia Diaz, 88, of Fitchburg who loved to be called “Mamita” by her family, passed away peacefully in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital on Saturday July 31, 2021 after a period of declining health.

   Mamita was born on May 26, 1933 in Guaranda, Ecuador a daughter of the late Gabriel and Hortencia (Orosco) Solano.  She migrated to New York in 1970, then moved to Fitchburg in 1987.

   Mamita was a loving devoted wife, mother and extraordinary woman who was known for her compassion, class and dignity, she was truly one of a kind. Elda was loved and admired by all those who knew her and she will be deeply missed.

   Mamita will be lovingly remembered by her four children, Jorge B. Diaz of VA, Monica C. Gecaj and her husband Lin of Carmel, NY, Edward E. Diaz and his wife Ana of Fitchburg, MA and Robert A. Diaz and his wife Abigail of Staten Island, NY; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Elda was predeceased by her four siblings, Gonzalo Chavez, Oslwaldo Chavez, Renne Flor and Anita Flor.

   When she lived in Ecuador, Elda was a teacher.  After moving to Fitchburg, she continued her passion for education working with children at the YMCA in Fitchburg.  Elda was a devoted Catholic and a longtime member of St. Bernard Parish of Fitchburg.  She remained very active in the church until her health no longer allowed.  Elda was great cook and an even better baker. She loved gardening and walking. Most of all Elda loved her family. She cherished every moment she spent with them.

   You are invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 from 5pm to 9pm in the Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Massachusetts Ave. Lunenburg. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021 from the funeral home at 9:30 AM with a Mass in St. Bernard Parish, 333 Mechanic St, Fitchburg, MA 01420 at 10:30 AM.  Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg.
