Elaine D.G. Greene

August 3, 1937 ~ November 23, 2021 (age 84)


Elaine D. (Gianopoulos) Greene died at home on November 23, 2021, of a respiratory infection. She was born August 3, 1937 in Hartford, CT and raised in South Willington, CT. She was the youngest child of George A. and Helene (Meyen) Gianopoulos. Her husband Jeremiah E. Greene, Jr. died in 2014. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Anne; her brother, John G. Gianopoulos; and a great nephew, Brandon G. Gianopoulos. She is survived by three children, Anthony J. Greene (Grace) of New York City, Meredith E. Ross (Peter) of New York City, and Edward J. Greene of Leominster, and two grandsons, Leo and Isaac Ross. She is also survived by her sister, Jean L. Gianopoulos of Hartford, CT; her brother, George A. Gianopoulos, of Marlborough, CT; and her husband's only remaining sibling, Mary B. Greene, of Dorchester, MA. She also leaves her nephews, John E. Gianopoulos, Perry M. Gianopoulos, and niece, Kim (Gianopoulos) Hanka, all of Manchester, CT; and nephew George A. Gianopoulos III, of Fort Collins, CO; as well as many extended members of the Greene family, grandnephews and nieces, and wonderful and special friends. Elaine received her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Hartford and her master's degree from Fitchburg State University. She was raised in agrarian New England and loved the rural surroundings. For many years she taught biology, ecology, math, and medical courses at several colleges. In her leisure, she was an avid knitter, reader, gardener, and environmentalist. In life she was Mom and Granny. Along with being a member of several professional organizations, Elaine was a member of Who's Who in American Education, and a life member of Appalachian Mountain Club. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date. Elaine's parting wish is that each person show kindness to others.
