Donald K. Hopple, 84, a longtime resident of Fitchburg, died Monday, Dec. 14, in Cary Medical Center in Caribou, Maine, with his grandson by his side.
His wife of 51 years, Joan (LaFrenier) Hopple died in 2013.
He leaves one son, James C. Hopple and his wife Colombe of Texas; one daughter, Jennifer A. Hyde and her husband Brian; 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judy K. Olcott who died in 2015 and two sisters, Shirley Davis in 1988 and Marilyn Nolan who died in 2018.
Donald was employed at the former Decatone Inc. for 18 years and later worked for the former Delongchanp Pontiac-Buick in Fitchburg as an auto reconditioner for several years.
He was born in Atchison, Kansas, a son of the late Kenneth and Violet (Owens) Hopple and moved to Caribou, Maine to live with his grandson Jason a year ago.
He was a 1954 graduate of Atchison High School and attended Emporia State University in Kansas for two years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict serving in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed building Native American and military figurines from wood putty.
Donald will be interred at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon with full Military Honors in the spring.
