The Last Dairy Farmer in Fitchburg

Fitchburg-Carl E. “Butch” Rossbach, passed away peacefully of Covid19 in Heywood Hospital, on Saturday morning October 16, 2021.

   Car was born on March 5, 1945 a son of the late Earl A. and Melvinia (Merchant) Rossbach.  Carl was a lifelong Fitchburg resident. He attended the Ashburnham St. School and BF Brown. 

  Carl worked for ten years for Howard Rossbach Construction in Leominster.  He then returned to the farm to help his dad. In 1970 Carl married his beloved wife Maryjane Hughes in Great Barrington, MA.   Carl continued to run the family farm until 2019, retiring due to open heart surgery, declining health and becoming wheelchair bound.

   Besides his wife Carl is survived by his daughter, Yonna M. Coon and her husband Daniel and their daughter Cheyenne all of Fitchburg; his son, Brian E. Rossbach and his wife Melissa Dorien and their three children, Madison, Ryder and Kendall and his step-grandson, Jordan Mays all of Leominster.  Carl is also survived by four sisters, Barbara Johnson of Ashburnham, June Albert and her husband Fred of Westminster, Laraine Smith of New Ipswich, NH and Earlene Fischer of Ashburnham; and many nieces and nephews.  Carl was predeceased by one sister, Doris Algier in 2007.

   Carl’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Nashoba Valley Nursing for the kind and wonderful care they gave him the last two years.  They would also like to thank all of their neighbors who stopped by every day to see him, including Donnie Bingham and Charlie Rossbach. A special thank you to Dr. Alexandra Schutes who always took great care of carl.

   Due to covid19 no services are planned at this time.  A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at a later date.

   The Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and the Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 243 Water St., has been entrusted with the care of Carl’s arrangements.
