Ahti Oscar Wiita 95
Fitchburg:Ahti O. Wiita, died Friday, May 15, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital, after suffering pneumonia, a
heart attack and breathing problems at the age of 95.
He leaves his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth Marguerita (Kuusela) Wiita;one son, Jeffrey L. Wiita, and his wife, Lisa B., and one sister, Elvie Daigle, all of Fitchburg. He also leaves many nieces and nephews all over the country.
Mr. Wiita was born in Fitchburg, on April 17, 1914, the son of the late Frans Oscar and Matilda Catarina (Konstenius) Wiita. He was the youngest son of 13 children. He attended school in Gardner and Fitchburg and graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1933. In 1926, he bought the family farm, known as Hillside Farm, from his mother and started farming in the dairy and egg business. He soon gave up the dairy and specialized only in the egg business. At one time he was the largest egg farm in Worcester County. He took many courses in business and finance during this time. He retired in 1969 and he and his wife later moved to Athol in 1987 and lived there over 17 years. They moved back to Fitchburg in 2004 to the family farm, where they have been cared for by their son and his wife since.
Mr. Wiita was a member of the Board of Directors of Workers Credit Union in Fitchburg and served as Vice President for many years. After many years of service, he retired and was named an Honorary Board of Director. He was a former a member of the Fitchburg Rotary Club, the Fitchburg Art Museum and the Fitchburg Farmers Coop. He was a volunteer at the former Burbank Hospital and later at the Athol Memorial Hospital Fair for many years. He was a member of the Finnish American Club of Siama and the Fitchburg Sportsman's Club. He was avid hunter and had a great interest in the outdoors. He was a member of G.O.A.L., the Gun Owners Action League.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. in the Beth Eden Baptist Church, 350 Ashburnham St., Fitchburg. Pastor Robert Daulton of the Beth Eden Baptist Church in Fitchburg will Officiate.
Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, will be private.
There are no calling hours.
